Unemployment is generally considered negative. The academic literature seems to agree that unemployment makes one sadder, sicker, and more anxious; not to mention poorer.

But these are contingent facts about unemployment and the role of working in society, not intrinsic ones.

The "forced vacation" of the COVID-19 pandemic did not initially lead to negative outcomes among laid off workers, but positive ones.

It is not unemployment itself that is negative, but the shame or guilt associated with it.

As a society, we have already agreed to limits to work like weekends and 8-hour workdays.

Our world is now built around working so it’s hard to imagine anything else. We will be endlessly imaginative in creating joy w/o it. The idea that we need work for meaning is a total gaslight from the top.

This is the kind of thinking and preparing we need to be doing on a national level to make transition smooth and less painful.

Challenge with all these point of views is they ignore How Humans will evolve with AI , we undermine workforce ownership, empathy & criticality a lot vs AI.

Sounds misanthropic to me to think everyone is deeply mediocre so we only have to make systems that suck sorta hard and then we can just sit back and let the crapitude flow.

If you want to stop working do it. But don't claim you're on some holy mission when your desired end state would be billions of lives ruined and a return to poverty level existence for 95% of humanity.

you must build the society willing to eliminate work and then make it happen

otherwise you are just creating a vehicle for upward wealth distribution and mass immiseration
