As one of the most critical infrastructure providers for artificial intelligence (AI) services, Amazon occupies a foundational role in today’s global digital ecosystem. During its military operations against Iran, the United States drew upon AI models developed by a range of technology firms. While a handful of companies — Anthropic among them — publicly distanced themselves from the US government ahead of hostilities, the majority willingly lent their capabilities to the war effort, some even boasting of their contributions.  #Topic of War #ScholER

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed an attack on his San Francisco home in a personal blog post on Friday, noting rising criticism of the AI industry and saying there is a need to “de-escalate the rhetoric.” Earlier that day, San Francisco police arrested a man for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence, according to media reports. Altman now wants the public to lower the temperature, but OpenAI and its peers helped raise it by repeatedly framing #Artificial Intelligence as potentially existentially dangerous. Altman’s past statements describing superhuman AI as perhaps the greatest threat to humanity, for example his signing of the 2023 extinction-risk statement, and his comparison of AI development to the Manhattan Project. Not that this justifies violence, it absolutely does not, but the public’s alarm did not come from nowhere. It was, in part, co-created by the people building the systems. OpenAI has not acted consistently with that message. When governments and lawmakers have actually tried to regulate frontier AI, OpenAI has often worked to weaken or block those efforts, like OpenAI’s opposition to California’s SB 1047, its lobbying to weaken parts of the EU AI Act, and its support for an Illinois bill that would limit its liability in some harm scenarios if it publishes safety reports. OpenAI supports “democratic process” in rhetoric while resisting meaningful outside oversight in practice. platformer.news/sam-altma..
