In the 1930s, depression bred fascism. Depression stretched from corner to corner of the globe, wrapping it in a suffocating embrace. And in their rage, misery, and despair, people began to believe the Big Lies demagogues told, about how it was all scapegoats’ fault. And the road to all that, a good economist would say, was paved with nationalism and isolationism, which hardened stagnation into properly implosive depression.

fascism never left the world---it just went in hibernation for a while, to mutate into a different form.
as soon as civilisation took hold, maybe 8k years ago.---enclosed land, cities and so on, the ruler has always been an autocrat.
Obey or die was the usual choice, that was the normality. Kings and emperors had the power to authorise executions, and maintain power in family hands, with a violent inner circle to do their bidding.
that has always been the essence of facism---it is most certainly returning.
It is returning because vast numbers of us see autocratic rule as the sole means of returning to 'what was'---it isn't of course, there's no means to 'get back' there.---And MAGA isn't seen as a return to fascism, but that is th inevitable price for a return to 'authority.
Democracy hassn't worked--so lets try something else?

In two years we’ll know whether or not we’ve turned back the fascistic fervor simmering well in America. The midterm election was surely a wake-up call to the Republican Party, but they’ve not changed their stripes in the least.
The Freedom Caucus in the House is determined to elevate its own Speaker, or at least, to exact concessions that bolster their influences. Even the more moderate Republicans in the House and Senate believe the senior population deserves lesser health care and monetary benefits. Obamacare will be obliterated, and consequently precondition protections that accompany that law. Disability payouts will be diminished. 
I don’t think we have any reason to take our eyes off ball in the next two years. The greatest hope of progressing positively in any way is to educate and motivate the youth of this nation. Their futures depend on their political understanding and participation. Wage stagnation will continue. Ecological devastation will continue. Fascism must be defeated in the next two years.
