Meta Platforms took down thousands of pages and accounts on Facebook to thwart an influence campaign from China.
Meta Platforms removed thousands of Facebook accounts and pages as part of an effort to take down a Chinese influence operation that stands out as the biggest of its kind to date, that company said Tuesday.
In a quarterly security report, Meta said the influence operation was designed to advance China’s interests and disparage critics of the Chinese government. Meta removed 7,704 Facebook accounts, 954 pages, 15 groups and 15 Instagram accounts, the report stated. Through its investigation, Meta said it found links to people working in Chinese law enforcement.
The influence operation was also active on other platforms, including TikTok and X. Meta estimated it to be “the largest known cross-platform covert influence operation to date,” according to the report.
